The Natron skyline is dominated by the textbook volcanic silhouette of Ol Doinyo Lengai, which rises more than 2km above the surrounding Rift Valley floor to an altitude of 2,960m, its harsh black contours softened by an icing of white ash that glistens brightly below the sun, as if in parody of Kilimanjaro’s snows. And so, too, is the most northerly landmark in the Tanzanian Rift Valley, the low-lying Lake Natron, a shallow sliver of exceptionally alkaline water that extends southward from the Kenyan border near Mount Shompole for 58km. Ethiopia’s Danakil Desert is one such spot the volcanic Virunga Range in the Albertine Rift is another.
Outside, guests can sit around the campfire in the evening and gaze at the millions of stars overhead from both the northern and southern hemisphere.There are but a handful of places where the Rift Valley evokes its geologically violent origins with graphic immediacy. Please note this is the only place to “plug in” throughout the camp. The mess is equipped with a bar, fridge, wifi and charging point for your cameras and phones. To the west, watch the sunset with a gin and tonic over the Masonic Mountain above the famous escarpment of the Great Rift Valley or just relax on our Bedouin style furniture (also made from waste plastic) and watch the world go by in one of the most peaceful environments you can imagine. Look north to the lake where hundreds of thousands of flamingos come to breed or to the south where Ol Doinyo Lengai dominates the landscape in every way. Guests can enjoy 360°views of the striking landscape that surrounds Lake Natron Camp. Soon after, the strength of the sun heats the land quickly but the material of our tent is designed to keep you cool even during the hottest of days.
